Some of the effective fertility preservation techniques include embryo freezing (cryopreservation), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and egg freezing.
FREMONT, CA: If women have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and wish to conceive a child, fertility preservation measures or therapies may be helpful. Some ways enhance the chances of becoming pregnant following cancer treatment. One may use donated eggs or embryos to carry a pregnancy to term. Adoption and surrogacy are examples of third-party reproductive alternatives that eliminate the need for a pregnancy to begin or grow one's family. Techniques for preserving fertility Embryo freezing (cryopreservation): This method maintains eggs that have been fertilized with sperm from a spouse or donor. Hormone tablets or injections stimulate the ovaries to create more eggs, increasing one's chances of pregnancy. Eggs are then extracted from the ovaries and integrated with sperm in a laboratory (a procedure known as in vitro fertilization, or IVF). If the fertilization process is successful, the embryo is frozen until the individuals are ready to have a child. Ovarian tissue transplants: This experimental procedure includes extracting and freezing ovarian tissue to prevent damage from cancer therapies. After the person have recovered from therapy, a physician will thaw the tissue and transplant it back. Once it is operational again, their eggs can be harvested for in vitro fertilization. Egg freezing: This procedure involves freezing eggs before fertilization and then thawing them afterward. If an individual doesn't have a spouse and doesn't want to use donor sperm, this technique may be more appealing. Egg freezing consists of three steps: Ovarian stimulation is when one takes medicine to stimulate one's ovaries to generate numerous eggs simultaneously. Egg retrieval is the process by which the doctor extracts mature eggs from their follicles. Freezing involves cooling the eggs to subzero levels and freezing them in specific containers. Freezing procedures are not without downsides. Side effects from egg retrieval may include bloating, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. If the cancer therapy permits it, the person may require more than one stimulation and retrieval cycle to produce healthy eggs or embryos. This is also a complicated and expensive procedure, with thousands of dollars in additional embryo or egg storage payments. And, while frequently successful, it does not always work. In vitro fertilization (IVF): Individuals may take fertility medications to stimulate their ovaries. Similar to embryo freezing, their doctor collects the eggs and utilizes sperm to fertilize them in a lab. They then implant one or more embryos into their uterus. They will also receive hormone shots to improve the health of their uterus and increase their chances of a successful pregnancy.
